Cleaning limits for this piece

  • Porous stone: no ultrasonic, no steam, no soaking. Keep away from perfume, hairspray, cosmetics and household cleaners. Put it on last, take it off first.
  • Mohs 2.5 – 4.5: this stone is softer than household dust, so it will scuff if it is rubbed against harder surfaces. Store it separately, not loose in a jewellery box.

About this piece

These are cultured pearls, grown inside a living freshwater mollusc around a deliberate implant. They are not natural pearls, which form without human involvement and are vanishingly rare, and they are not imitation pearls, which are coated beads. At Mohs 2.5 to 4.5 pearl is softer than ordinary household dust, most of which is quartz at Mohs 7 — which is why a pearl that has been rubbed with a dry cloth for years goes dull. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, not before.

The Mohs 2.5 warning is not decoration — I have ruined pearls before by leaving them in a box with rings. Stored these separately as instructed and they still look new.
