About this piece
Blue topaz starts as near-colourless topaz. It is irradiated to produce a colour centre, then heated to stabilise the result. Two distinct treatments, listed separately below rather than folded into one word. The finished stone is not radioactive — irradiated topaz is held until residual activity falls below regulatory limits before it can be sold. Commercial irradiation of topaz began in the 1970s and is the reason blue topaz went from rare to inexpensive inside a decade.
