Cleaning limits for this piece

  • Porous stone: no ultrasonic, no steam, no soaking. Keep away from perfume, hairspray, cosmetics and household cleaners. Put it on last, take it off first.
  • Mohs 5.5 – 6.5: this stone is softer than household dust, so it will scuff if it is rubbed against harder surfaces. Store it separately, not loose in a jewellery box.

About this piece

Solid natural opal, cut as a single piece of material. It is not a doublet or triplet, which are assembled stones with a thin opal layer bonded to a backing and sometimes a clear cap. Opal is hydrated silica containing between 3 and 21 per cent water, which is why it dislikes dry heat, direct sunlight for long periods and sudden temperature change. Play of colour differs completely between stones — no two opals show the same pattern, and the photograph is representative rather than of this stone.

Solid opal, not a doublet, and the page says which. Play of colour is mostly green and blue on mine with a little orange at one edge. Delighted, though I do treat it carefully.
