About this piece
Topaz is Mohs 8, harder than quartz, harder than garnet. It is also one of the few gem materials with a perfect basal cleavage, which means a sharp knock in the wrong direction can split it cleanly however hard it is. That is why this piece is graded occasional wear rather than daily. Hardness resists scratching; toughness resists breaking. They are separate properties and this stone is a good example of the gap.
